RACE 1:  The Love Benchmark 64 Handicap 1885m

Oakfield Ella – from a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

French Response – from a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

Stunned – when left racing wide and without cover passing the 1200m was restrained by its rider to obtain a position at the rear of the field trailing Oakfield Ella.  Raced keenly in the middle stages.

Fuji Fury – approaching the winning post became unbalanced when bumped by I’m Going.  When questioned regarding the performance, App. L Day stated that she was instructed to ride her mount with cover, however, when caught wide in the early stages and when the tempo was only moderate, she allowed her mount to stride forward to assume a position outside the leader Scotty Be Gotti near the 1200m.  She added, however, that after doing some work to obtain this position, her mount, which was racing first up today over 1885m, was left without a finishing effort.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

I’m Going – when questioned regarding the performance, rider D McLellan stated that his mount travelled well in a midfield position throughout the early and middle stages.  He said that he was obliged to ride his mount along from the 600m, which was sooner than he would have liked, in order to hold Bells ‘N’ Bows, which was positioned to his inside in a pocket, however, his mount failed to respond to his riding and in his opinion it failed to run the 1885m of today’s race.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

French Response – when questioned regarding his riding from the 600m, A Gibbons stated that, as his mount was positioned to the inside of I’m Going and Oakfield Ella, he was unable to shift it to the outside and was obliged to pursue runs through the field.  He stated that after straightening he initially directed his mount to the inside of Mister Hootabell, which he anticipated would weaken in the home straight, with a view to shifting that runner wider and obtaining clear running between Fuji Fury and Our Fun.  He added that when Mister Hootabell did not weaken as anticipated, he shifted to that runner’s outside near the 300m and attempted to improve into a narrow run that had developed between Mister Hootabell and Bells ‘N’ Bows.  He said, however, his mount was disappointed for this run when Mister Hootabell was taken out by Our Fun passing the 200m.  A Gibbons further stated that his mount was then awkwardly positioned close to the heels of Mr Hootabell for a short distance, before being shifted to the inside of Our Fun near the 150m to secure clear running where his mount closed its race off strongly.

RACE 2:  Newcastle Stevedores 4YO&Up Maiden Handicap 1400m

Zada – slow to begin.

Flying Cosmos – slow to begin.  Lost its off-fore plate near the 250m.  Rider M Bell was reprimanded under AR132(7)(a)(i) for using his whip on two consecutive strides on two separate occasions prior to the 100m.

Starbug – slow to begin (4L).  A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which was beaten 21 lengths, did not reveal any abnormalities.   Stable representative Mr C Rahn was told Starbug must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again.

Collingwood – hung in from the 600m, then continued to hang in in the home straight.

Graceful Zarifa - briefly held up rounding the home turn.

RACE 3:  Skildare Maiden Handicap 1600m

Sheriff Kendell – a veterinary examination of the gelding deemed it suitable to race.  When the pace slowed near the 1300m commenced to race fiercely and near the 1000m had to be checked away from the heels of Chilli Chilli. Sheriff Kendell then continued to overrace throughout the middle stages.  Trainer Mr J Smith advised that the gelding would now be spelled.

Snuggle Bug - underwent a veterinary examination on arrival at the barriers at the request of its rider T Wolfgram and was deemed suitable to race.  From the outside barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.  Trainer Mr P Cheers was advised a warning would be placed on the mare for being uncompetitive.

Superhombre - began awkwardly and bumped Dusktilldawn.

Southern Spirit – held up rounding the home turn and shortly after straightening was disappointed for a narrow run between Dusktilldawn and Superhombre.  Southern Spirit was then directed to the inside of Superhombre near the 300m to obtain clear running.  K Latham dropped his whip near the 150m.

Chilli Chilli – held up rounding the home turn and then on a number of occasions between the 400m and the 250m made contact with Manseneta when attempting to improve between that runner and Seporto where there was insufficient room.

Seporto - hung in under pressure over the final 200m obliging its rider S Guymer to change his whip to his right hand near the 100m.

Manseneta – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 4:  Jarrad Mitchell Constructions 3YO Maiden Plate 900m

Bella Chica – slow to begin.

The Spell - began awkwardly and lost ground.  Raced wide and without cover throughout.

Charles Seven – began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly.

Calbuco – slow to begin.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be 3/5 lame in the off-foreleg.  Trainer Mr G Frazer was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Calbuco racing or barrier trialling again.

My Rose My Kingdom – hung out rounding the home turn.

RACE 5:  Hepmac Lawyers Conditional Benchmark 70 Handicap 1200m

Through The Cracks – slow to begin.  When questioned regarding the performance, rider A Gibbons stated that his mount was unsuited by the slow tempo throughout the early and middle stages, which caused it to overrace and then made it difficult to make up ground on the leaders when the race developed into a sprint home.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Your Witness – overraced in the early stages and near the 900m was checked away from the heels of The Crimson Idol.

Scenic Sight – rider D McLellan reported that he endeavoured to obtain cover on the mare, however, due to the slow tempo throughout the early stages was unable to restrain his mount sufficiently to obtain cover.  He said that near the 900m he was able to briefly obtain cover behind Can I Rock, however, when the gelding was racing keenly he clipped the heels of that runner and blundered.  He added that, whilst he was able to obtain cover between the 900m and the 700m, Scenic Sight was left racing three wide and without cover from the 700m when Can I Rock improved to a position outside the leader.  D McLellan further stated that, bearing in mind the slow tempo of today’s race and the racing manners of Scenic Sight he was not too disappointed with the mare’s overall performance.

The Crimson Idol – when questioned regarding her riding in the early stages, R Murray stated that she was instructed to obtain cover on her mount and had anticipated racing behind the leaders.  She said after beginning well she did not pressure her mount in the hope that other runners would show intent to go forward and when Powertrain obtained a margin on her mount near the 1000m she was content to allow that runner to cross her mount and trail it throughout the event.  R Murray stated that the tempo was slow throughout the event and, after being crossed by Powertrain near the 800m, the tempo slowed even further.  She added that when the race developed into a sprint home her mount was unable to take ground off Powertrain in the straight.  R Murray was advised that in the opinion of the Stewards she had erred in allowing Powertrain to cross her mount near the 800m when the tempo was slow and when it was open for her to take up the lead on her mount, which afforded the favourite Powertrain too soft a run in the lead.

RACE 6:  Pacific National Cup Class 2 Handicap 900m

Denman Unlimited – prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards viewed the footage of the start of the race to ascertain whether the filly had been denied a fair start.  After viewing the films, it was established that Denman Unlimited was a little fractious in the barriers prior to the start being effected and was being assisted by a barrier attendant.  It was further established that simultaneously with the start being effected Denman Unlimited, when still in the care of the barrier attendant, reared, then blundered and lost significant ground (7L).  As Stewards were satisfied that the incident was due to the barrier manners of Denman Unlimited, the filly was deemed to be a starter and correct weight was declared.  Trainer Mr B Cavanough was told Denman Unlimited would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again.

Accessory Diva – began awkwardly.

Crazy Pops – slow to begin.

Jack’s Image – from a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

Brutality slow to begin.

Grenadiers – began awkwardly and bumped Duke Of Hearts.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

No Complaints – near the 900m was steadied away from the heels of Rich And Shamless, which shifted in when not clear.  App. Day was told to ensure she is two lengths clear when shifting ground.  Passing the 800m was steadied to avoid the heels of California August (T Wolfgram), which shifted in when not clear.  T Wolfgram was told to ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground.

Duke Of Hearts – for some distance rounding the first turn raced in restricted room between Grenadiers and No Complaints, which was inclined to lay in away from Rich And Shameless.

RACE 8:  Newsure Class 1 Handicap 1300m

Outward – slow to begin and then from a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

Fearless Mila – slow to begin.

Know Where To Look – slow to begin.  Raced wide and without cover throughout the event.  Shortly after straightening was placed in restricted room between Hubble and You Too (L Magorrian), which shifted out.  Know When To Look then continued to race in restricted room until passing the 200m and was unable to be tested during this time.  Again near the 75m was placed in restricted room due to You Too shifting out and as a consequence was unable to be fully tested in the run to the finish.  L Magorrian was told he should have made more effort to keep his mount on a straight course.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities/

Hubble – from a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.  Passing the 800m improved onto the heels of Fearless Mila and was steadied and shifted out.  Laid in under pressure over the final 200m.
