Race 7: CHANNEL 7 QUEENSLAND DERBY – 2400M

On return to scale D. Oliver, the rider of VOW AND DECLARE, placed 2nd by the Judge, lodged an objection against MR QUICKIE (A. Allen), being declared the winner, alleging interference inside the final 300m. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the videos it was established that MR QUICKIE shifted out to obtain clear running near the 300m and brushed VOW AND DECLARE, and over the final 100m again shifted outwards, momentarily hampering VOW AND DECLARE, which had to be eased away from that runner’s heels, however, bearing in mind the margin separating both runners at the finish and the extent of the interference, stewards dismissed the objection and declared correct weight on the Judge’s placings.

Brown had been transported to hospital, the inquiry was adjourned to a later date to allow jockey Brown to be present. The veterinary surgeon reported that the mare sustained a major fracture to the near hind leg and was euthanased on humane grounds.

CARIF – Raced three wide without cover in the early stages.

ALIFEROUS – Overraced badly in the middle stages. Shifted out when overracing near the 1400m and soon afterwards STARS OF CARRUM, when overracing, improved from the rear of the field wide and was allowed to stride forward.
