Irish Derby winner Sovereign ruled out for rest of the season

Shock Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby winner Sovereign has not been seen since his emphatic success in June and the wait for his next start is set to go on until 2020, Aidan O'Brien said on Monday.

The 33-1 Classic winner, who claimed the scalps of Anthony Van Dyck, Madhmoon and Broome under a brilliant front-running ride from Padraig Beggy, holds an entry for Sunday's Comer Group International Irish St. Leger but is set for an extended break.

O'Brien told the Racing Post: "Sovereign won't run again this year, he'll be put away until next year.

"We'll start him off early next year and go from there. He hasn't had a setback, we just want to give him time."

Sovereign has won two of his nine starts and over £800,000 in prize-money, was placed on his first two runs this term behind stablemate Broome at Leopardstown and finished tenth in the Investec Derby.
